SWSA - Hoosier Hills Food Drive

Congratulations to the members of SWSA and thanks to everyone who contributed to the Hoosier Hills Food Drive.  The SWSA collected 789lbs of food.  Great job everyone! 

The Hoosier Hills Food Bank in Bloomington, Indiana, is a not-for-profit organization that collects, stores, and distributes surplus and donated food products to over 116 local agencies that run feeding programs for the needy. Hoosier Hills Food Bank serves Monroe, Martin, Owen, Orange, Brown, and Lawrence Counties in Central Indiana.

Irene Queiro-Tajalli, Amber Smallwood, Irene Weinberg, and Clarissa Wentworth

Amber Smallwood and Clarissa Wentworth are this year's recipients of the Theo Allen Memorial Scholarship.  The students each received $600 and met the donor of the Theo Allen Memorial Scholarship, Irene Weinberg. Also there to present the scholarships were Kathy Byers, Program Director for the Bloomington BSW program, (not pictured) and Irene Queiro-Tajalli, Executive Director of Undergraduate Education for the I.U. School of Social Work.


Policy Students Receive Grant

As part of a class assignment, students in Sabrina Williamson-Sullenberger's Spring 2005 policy class wrote a grant to Broadway Cares on behalf of Positive Link, a local agency providing HIV testing and services to those living with AIDS and HIV. The students-- Homa Mardanzai, Marian Frick, Theresa Schwartz, and Stephen Young--received word that $2500 was awarded for emergency services to Positive Link clients. Additionally, the grant money is renewable every 6 months, so Positive Link may earn up to $5000 annually for this grant. Congratulations, everyone!

Noorie Brantmeier, Bloomington B.S.W. student

Bloomington B.S.W. student Noorie Brantmeier is a McNair Scholar. The McNair Scholars program is a nationally known honors program that helps students identify areas of research and academic specialty and provides support and enrichment that help them throughout school with the ultimate goal that they will get a Ph.D.  Noorie plans to enter a joint M.S.W./J.D. program and work in juvenile justice/child advocacy.

Jackie Siegel and Leila Voyles received the Theo Allen Memorial Scholarship at a luncheon that took place September 23, 2004, at the Tudor Room in the Indiana Memorial Union. The students each received $600 and met the donor of the Theo Allen Memorial Scholarship, Irene Weinberg. Also there to present the scholarships were Kathy Byers, Program Director for the Bloomington BSW program, and Irene Queiro-Tajalli, Executive Director of Undergraduate Education for the I.U. School of Social Work.


B.S.W. Students Are Hudson-Holland Scholars

Bloomington B.S.W. students Annie Lynch, Laura Bonano, and Shaya Newton participate in the Hudson & Holland Scholars program, an I.U. scholarship and mentoring program for academically gifted students who are from ethnically diverse and/or underrepresented backgrounds in higher education.


Faculty Receive NASW Service Award

This year both Coordinator of Field Instruction Pamela J. Huggins and Program Director Kathy Byers received the Service Award from the Indiana Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).


Faculty Receive Student Choice Award Nominations

I.U. School of Social Work professors Carlene Quinn, Carol Hostetter, and Leslie Skooglund were nominated by their students for the 2005 Student Choice Award for Teaching Excellence. Of the nomination, Carlene Quinn said, "This is the greatest honor I can receive as an instructor: knowing that I made a difference in the life of a student."
