BSW Curriculum

A minimum of 122 credit hours is required for the B.S.W. degree. In addition to social work courses and electives, the following outlines the general liberal arts requirements.

General Requirements
(8 courses)

  • ENG W131 English Composition
  • ENG W231 Professional Writing Skills
  • HIST H106 Modern American History
  • Two courses designated as arts and humanities courses
    from the following departments:
    • African American and African Diaspora Studies
    • Communication and Culture
    • English (excluding the composition course)
    • Fine Arts
    • Folklore
    • Foreign Languages and Cultures (including Sign Language)
      (100 level and above)
    • Gender Studies
    • History
    • Music
    • Philosophy
    • Religious Studies
    • Theatre and Drama
  • PSY P101 Psychology as a Biological Science
  • Computer Science/Mathematics/Physical Sciences (2 courses)
    • CSCI A110 Introduction to Computing (required)
    • For the second course, students select one course from
      the following:
      • Astronomy
      • Chemistry
      • Geology
      • Mathematics
      • Physical Geography
      • Physics
      • Statistics (strongly recommended)
        • CJUS K300 Techniques of Data Analysis
        • HPER H391 Health Statistics

  • Macro- or microeconomics (1 course)

The Bloomington BSW Degree Plan is a suggested four-year outline of which courses a student should take in order to complete the BSW degree in four years.

The IU School of Social Work 2006-2008 Bulletin includes course descriptions and degree requirements for the BSW as well as the MSW and Ph.D. degrees (Note: The Bloomington campus only offers the BSW.)
